Galston Valley Railway: A Hidden Gem in Sydney’s Hills District

By Rajiv Chaudhri - Editor-in-Chief

Nestled in the bushlands of Galston, New South Wales, the Galston Valley Railway offers a unique and nostalgic experience for train enthusiasts and families alike. Operated by the Hornsby Model Engineers Co-Op Ltd, this picturesque miniature railway features approximately 1 kilometre of 5-inch gauge track winding through scenic bushland, providing a delightful setting for its visitors.

Open to the public on the second Sunday of each month from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the railway allows guests to enjoy rides on scale model locomotives, including both steam and diesel engines. The trains traverse a beautifully landscaped environment, offering a relaxing and immersive experience.

In addition to regular operating days, the Galston Valley Railway hosts special events such as the annual Galston500. This endurance event challenges teams to complete a combined total of 500 laps around the track, raising funds for Multiple Sclerosis research at The Westmead Institute for Medical Research. The event features live entertainment, food stalls, and the opportunity to ride behind participating locomotives.

Visitors can bring their own picnics or enjoy offerings from the on-site BBQ and canteen. The Community Foundation of North Western Sydney serves hot drinks and cold drinks via it’s Project Barista Connect Program.

Entry is $10 for adults, with children under 18 admitted free. Train rides are available for $3.50 each, providing an affordable and enjoyable outing for all ages.
