Review: AACTA Exclusive Screening of Mix Tape at Palace Cinemas

By Rajiv Chaudhri - Editor in Chief

On Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) hosted an exclusive screening of the upcoming BINGE Original series Mix Tape at Palace Cinemas, The Como Centre in Melbourne. The event offered attendees a first look at the series’ premiere episode, followed by an insightful Q&A session with key members of the creative team.

Mix Tape is a poignant romantic drama that oscillates between the late 1980s and the present day, exploring the enduring connection between Daniel (Jim Sturgess) and Alison (Teresa Palmer). Their teenage selves, portrayed by Rory Walton-Smith and Florence Hunt respectively, navigate young love in 1989 Sheffield, England. Decades later, a shared song rekindles their bond, prompting reflections on love, destiny, and the choices that shape our lives.

The screening captivated the audience with its authentic storytelling, compelling performances, and evocative soundtrack. Director Lucy Gaffy’s nuanced approach and writer Jo Spain’s heartfelt script were evident in the seamless transitions between timelines and the depth of character development.

The subsequent Q&A session featured actor Rory Walton-Smith, director Lucy Gaffy, producer Polly Staniford, and Foxtel Group’s Head of Scripted Originals, Lana Greenhalgh. They delved into the creative process, character arcs, and the significance of music in the narrative, offering attendees a deeper appreciation of the series’ thematic layers.

Mix Tape is set to premiere on BINGE and Showcase at 8:30 PM on June 12, 2025, with episodes available On Demand.
