On 13 February, Angus Taylor was elected the 17th Leader of the Federal Liberal Party, securing 34 votes to 17 against Sussan Ley in a party room ballot. His elevation comes at a pivotal moment for the party, just days after he candidly described its position as the weakest since its formation in 1944.
At 59, Taylor brings significant experience across education, business and public service. A Rhodes Scholar, farmer and former management consultant with McKinsey & Co and Port Jackson Partners, he combines academic distinction with private sector expertise. Since his election to the seat of Hume in 2013, he has held senior portfolios including Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction, Minister for Law Enforcement and Cybersecurity, Shadow Treasurer, and most recently Shadow Minister for Defence.
Upon assuming the leadership, Taylor made clear his priorities: restoring Australia’s standard of living and protecting the nation’s way of life. He has signalled that home ownership will sit at the heart of the Australian dream under his leadership, alongside an immigration policy centred on Australian interests and values. He has reaffirmed the Liberal Party’s commitment to lower taxes, greater choice in childcare, and strong funding for national defence.
Taylor has emphasised the importance of returning to core Liberal values while listening more closely to Australians’ concerns. His message is one of unity, focusing on family, community and nation and restoring opportunity and aspiration.
A strong democracy depends on a strong opposition. The task ahead for Angus Taylor is to articulate a compelling policy vision, rebuild public trust, and hold the Government to account in the national interest.
