The Real Solution Isn’t Parking – It’s Local Opportunity

By Sue Lawrence

Every morning, we’re hearing the same story.

Earlier alarms. Longer days. More pressure on families just trying to get to work.

The conversation right now is about parking and it’s understandable. When people can’t access transport easily, it impacts everything: work, time with family, and cost of living.

But this is also a moment to look at the bigger picture.

If thousands of people need to leave The North West before sunrise just to access employment, something deeper isn’t working.

Our region shouldn’t just be a place people sleep. It should be a place where people can live, work and build their future locally where your job, your school, your services and your community are all within reach.

Because there’s real freedom in being within 15 minutes of home.

Freedom to spend less time commuting and more time with your family.

Freedom to support local businesses and be part of your community.

Freedom to build a life that isn’t dictated by train timetables and traffic.

More parking may ease the symptom.

But stronger local employment, better-connected business hubs, and real collaboration between industry, education and community that’s what addresses the cause.

When we invest in:

Local jobs
Local business growth
Partnerships between schools, industry and training
Smarter transport connections within our region

We reduce the need for long commutes in the first place.

That means:

Less time in traffic
More time with family and friends
Stronger local economy
More resilient community

Let’s solve the problem properly.

We’ll continue advocating for practical, immediate improvements like better transport links. But we’ll also keep pushing for something more sustainable:

A region where opportunity exists close to home.

Because strong communities don’t just move people they support them to stay, contribute, and thrive locally.
