Lauren Daigle – Bridging the divide between Christian music and mainstream audiences

By Martin Cartwright

Lauren Ashley Daigle (born September 9, 1991) is an American singer-songwriter whose music sits at the crossroads of contemporary Christian, gospel, soul, and pop. Her evocative, soulful alto voice – often compared to mainstream pop/soul vocalists – has helped her bridge the divide between Christian music and mainstream audiences.

She grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana, in a musical environment that included zydeco, blues, and Cajun influences – a rich cultural mix that helped shape her distinctive vocal style and emotive delivery.

At age 15, she contracted a serious illness (cytomegalovirus) that caused her to miss two years of school. That period deepened her faith and led her to lean more heavily into music as her outlet.

Career Beginnings & Breakthrough

Before fame, Lauren auditioned for American Idol (2010 and 2012), though she didn’t make it to the final rounds.

  • She later signed with Centricity Music.
  • Her first major release was a Christmas-themed track (“Light of the World”) on a label compilation (2013), which helped introduce her voice to Christian-music listeners.
  • Her debut studio album, How Can It Be (2015), was a breakout — it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart and was later certified Platinum.
  • The album spawned several No. 1 Christian-chart singles — including “First,” “O’Lord,” “Come Alive,” and “Trust in You.”

Rise to Stardom — Crossover Success & Mainstream Break

  • Her second major album, Look Up Child (2018), extended her reach beyond Christian-music audiences. The lead single You Say became a massive hit – it spent a record-breaking extended period at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian charts and even charted on mainstream lists.
  • The commercial performance of Look Up Child was historic — its opening week sales made it “the strongest sales week for any Christian album in the streaming era” at the time.
  • Critics and industry observers have noted that Lauren’s success marks one of the most significant crossovers from Christian to mainstream pop since the early ’90s.

Awards & Recognition

Lauren Daigle has received wide recognition for her music, including:
• 2 × Grammy Awards
• 6 × Billboard Music Awards
• 4 × American Music Awards
• 12 × GMA Dove Awards (major awards in Christian/gospel music)

Her impact is considered significant not just within Christian music — but in contemporary music broadly because of her crossover success, wide appeal, and ability to reach listeners beyond traditional faith-based audiences.

Recent Work & Evolving Sound

  • In September 2023, Lauren released her self-titled album Lauren Daigle, marking a turn toward a more mainstream pop and soul sound while still grounded in themes of faith, hope, and personal struggle.
  • She has described this period – especially during the global pandemic – as a time of introspection, reinvention, and re-centering on what matters: connection, hope, and love. The album aims to reflect “acknowledging despair” but ending with hope – a message she hopes resonates widely.
  • Even as she changes styles, many fans find her signature emotional honesty, soulful delivery, and faith-rooted lyrics remain central.

Why She Matters & What Sets Her Apart

Crossover appeal: Unlike many faith-based artists, Lauren Daigle has successfully bridged Christian and mainstream music – while keeping authenticity.

  • Vocal distinctiveness: Her warm, smoky alto carries emotional depth – allowing her to perform worship songs, soul-inflected ballads, and mainstream pop with equal conviction.
  • Message of hope and faith: Her music resonates with listeners seeking encouragement, meaning, or spiritual reassurance – particularly in challenging times.
  • Versatility and growth: From church choirs to Billboard charts, holiday albums to mainstream contemplative pop – her career reflects growth, adaptability, and evolving artistry.
