The Need for a Second Police Station in The Hills
By Peter Gangemi former Mayor of the Hills Shire
The rapid growth of The Hills district has intensified calls for a second police station to better support both residents and frontline officers serving the community.
Police in The Hills Police Area Command continue to do an outstanding job protecting local families and businesses, despite servicing one of the largest and fastest-growing regions in metropolitan Sydney. Many believe it is now time for the NSW Government to provide resources that match the demands being placed on officers.
The first Castle Hill Police Station opened in 1897 on the corner of Showground and Old Northern Roads. At that time, The Hills population was around 3,000 people. The current station, located at Pennant Street and McMullen Avenue, opened in 1989 when the district’s population had grown to approximately 110,000.
Today, in 2026, more than 230,000 residents live within The Hills Police Area Command boundaries, yet the region still operates from a single station. The command stretches approximately 37 kilometres from Carlingford in the south to Maroota in the north, making it one of the largest geographic policing areas in NSW for a population of its size.

Suburbs such as Rouse Hill, Box Hill and Gables have experienced enormous population growth and are located significant distances from the current station. A second police station in the northern or western parts of The Hills would improve response times, increase police visibility, and provide more effective coverage for rapidly expanding communities and Metro precincts including Rouse Hill and Kellyville.

While the NSW Government has confirmed that a future station is included in the NSW Police Force Capital Investment Plan, community leaders argue the need is immediate. Former Hills Shire Mayor Peter Gangemi says residents and officers deserve a firm commitment, clear funding, and a confirmed construction timeline for this essential community infrastructure.
