The transformative power of vocational education and training (VET) was on full display at the 2025 NSW Training Awards, with Sydney-based electrician Kathryn Beale named Apprentice of the Year. At just 27, Kathryn’s journey is one of resilience and determination, homeless at 15, she is now on the verge of buying her first home.

Recognised for her technical excellence during her electrical apprenticeship with NECA Group Training, hosted by Star Electrical, Kathryn has gone on to work on major infrastructure projects while also mentoring colleagues and encouraging more women into the trade. “This training pathway has been truly transformative,” she said. “Despite challenges in a male-dominated industry, I’ve gained confidence and resilience, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”

The awards also celebrated Imogen Young-Maloney of Wagga Wagga City Council, named Trainee of the Year for her outstanding work as a business support officer. Imogen actively promotes VET opportunities to young people, reminding students that “education and careers are not one size fits all.”

Now in its 70th year, the NSW Training Awards, presented by Training Services NSW, honour students, trainers, providers, and employers who exemplify excellence. Regional NSW shone particularly bright in 2025, with most awards going to individuals and organisations outside metropolitan Sydney.

Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan, praised the winners as role models who “uplift futures and strengthen our communities.” Award recipients will represent NSW at the Australian Training Awards in Darwin this December.
