The India Club operates to promote worthy interests of Indian Australian community.
By Rajiv Chaudhri - Editor in Chief
Since its inception in 2004, India Club Inc. has grown from a heartfelt initiative into a vibrant not-for-profit organisation serving the Indian‑Australian community in Sydney. Founded by Shubha Kumar and her husband Dr Aksheya Kumar, the Club was born out of their desire to create a social and cultural abode for progressive people of Indian origin, mostly professionals & business people from diverse cultural, educational and all social backgrounds.
From the outset, the Kumars envisioned a space where culture, camaraderie, and community service could flourish. At monthly “Snack & Chat” mornings, bridge games, Diwali celebrations, and educational talks, members found connection and purpose. Their mission to “enrich lives of fellow Club members” and promote multicultural harmony has driven a wide range of initiatives: from welfare community forums that caught the attention of NSW legislators, to recognition of grassroots heroes in health, environment, and arts.
One of the Club’s landmark achievements came in October 2013, when the Sydney Opera House was illuminated in celebration of Diwali, an effort led by the Kumars and supported by community diplomacy with state government. Annual Republic Day and Australia Day events complete with flag-raising by local dignitaries underscored the Club’s role as a bridge between Indian culture and wider Australian society.
Today, under Shubha’s presidency and Dr Aksheya’s chairmanship, India Club Inc. stands as a testament to their vision: a warm, inclusive hub where friendship, heritage, and service unite and where one day, “Chalo Club chalte hain!” “let’s go to the Club!”is a familiar invitation for all.
