In a significant boost to local communities, the Albanese Government has announced it will bring forward more than $1.7 billion in untied financial assistance to councils across Australia. This funding, representing 50% of the 2025-26 Financial Assistance Grant allocations, will be delivered before 30 June to ensure councils can continue to provide vital services without interruption.
The early injection of funds aims to support shovel-ready projects, ease cash flow concerns, and assist councils still recovering from extreme weather events. As the funding is untied, local governments will have the flexibility to allocate it to projects and services based on their unique community needs.
Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King emphasised the federal government’s commitment to being a “reliable and responsive partner” to councils.
“By providing this financial assistance early, we’re providing certainty to councils that they can deliver on the priorities that matter most to their communities,” she said.
Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain praised the role of local governments as “the beating heart of Australia,” particularly in times of adversity. “This funding will ensure they can get on with the jobs they do best, without any unnecessary delays,” she said.
This early allocation builds on a legacy of support, with over $70 billion invested in local government through the Financial Assistance Grant Program over the past four decades, alongside complementary programs like Roads to Recovery and the Growing Regions Program.
