Roblox to Roll Out New Safety Measures in Australia
By Martin Cartwright - Founder & Head of Marketing and Design
Following concerns raised about grooming risks and compliance with Australia’s industry codes and standards, popular online gaming platform Roblox will introduce a comprehensive suite of new safety protections.
Key measures include:
🎮 Private accounts by default for users under 16.
🎮 Parental consent required before adults can contact under 16s.
🎮 Age estimation technology to verify users before accessing communication features.
In addition, several communication functions – such as direct chat and in-game “experience chat” will now be switched off by default for children until age estimation is complete. Even once enabled, under-16s will be restricted from chatting with adults.
Voice chat will remain prohibited for under 13s, and new restrictions will block voice communication between adults and 13–15 year olds.
Australia’s online safety laws require all digital platforms to take proactive steps to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. We will be closely monitoring Roblox’s rollout of these protections and will consider regulatory action if future non-compliance arises.
➡ Roblox has committed to implementing these safety measures in Australia by the end of 2025, following our engagement with the platform.
