Hills Shire Council Fail to Cleanup Asbestos Contamination in Local Reserve.

Susan Sandercock

It has been four years since the Hills Shire Council became aware of the Asbestos contamination in Fred Caterson Reserve, Castle Hill. Yet they have failed to follow the Remedial Action Plan and cleanup the site despite receiving 2 reports (Oct 2021 & Mar2024) identifying the presence of Asbestos in Fred Caterson Reserve.

Local residents are deeply concerned and rightly furious that Council has failed to take the required steps to remediate the site, comply with EPA guidelines, and obtain a Site Validation Report and an Asbestos Clearance Certificate as recommended in both Contamination reports by Geotechnique Pty Ltd.

The contaminated land, known as the Pony Club, is a contentious issue. The proposed development for the site is highly controversial and is currently being challenged in the Land and Environment Court by Fred Caterson Champions Inc.
