A Soulful Dance Journey Takes Flight at Sydney Opera House

By Rajiv Chaudhri - Editor-In-Chief

From 28-31 January 2026, Sydney audiences are invited to experience Songs of the Bulbul, an evocative, spiritually resonant dance performance presented at the Sydney Opera House Playhouse.

Created and performed by internationally acclaimed UK dancer and choreographer Aakash Odedra, this extraordinary solo work draws inspiration from an ancient Sufi myth about a nightingale, or “bulbul”, held in captivity. In Persian culture, the bulbul symbolises the soul’s yearning for unity with the divine; its song, fleeting and fleetingly beautiful, becomes a metaphor for the human journey toward freedom and transcendence.

The narrative unfolds as the bulbul’s despair deepens under confinement, yet it sings ever more beautifully as its end approaches. This powerful allegory explores the tension between earthly limitations and spiritual liberation, inviting audiences to reflect on their own paths toward enlightenment.

Songs of the Bulbul masterfully blends the graceful intensity of Kathak dance, a classical Indian form, with Sufi storytelling, classical music and poetic expression. Accompanied by a rich score from composer Rushil Ranjan and shaped by choreographer Rani Khanam, the performance transcends conventional boundaries to create an immersive and transformative experience.

Presented by the Sydney Opera House and supported by Manchester Camerata, Jacob’s Pillow and the British Council, this work has earned critical acclaim for its emotional depth and artistic virtuosity, leaving audiences with a profound sense of beauty, loss and hope.
