CASTLE HILL PLAYERS AT THE PAVILION THEATRE  – 2026 SUBSCRIPTION SEASON NOW OPEN

By Robyn Dalton

The Castle Hill Players have been entertaining audiences since 1954 and took up residence in the old Taylor Pavilion in Castle Hill Showground in 1966..  that makes 60 years of the highest quality entertainment in a beautifully restored little theatre.  Audiences members can be assured of free parking and interval refreshments, a climate controlled and fully raked auditorium, hearing loops and accessible seating, parking and bathrooms.

The new subscription series for 2026 has just been announced and audiences can be assured that more of the same will continue in the future.

The season starts with an old favourite….”Arsenic and Old Lace”.. by Joseph Kesserling ….a fast moving, farcical, black comedy which will have you in stitches….. no surgery required!

The next play in the season will be “The Graduate”……. based on the novel by Charles Webb and later made into the very popular and famous movie.  A delightful yet searing comedy of mismatches and generational divisions… of acceptance of social norms versus following your instincts.  With a tune or two from the era thrown in “ The Graduate “ will knock your socks off .  Here’s to you Mrs Robinson !

Play  3 “ The Last Witch” written by Rona Munro,  is based on the historical case of the last witch ever to be executed for witchcraft in Britain. In 18 th century Scotland,  the play questions whether Janet Horne is a witch or just a dirt poor widow relying on her wits to keep herself and Helen alive. A summoner of winds and rain or a charlatan manipulating her friends and foes. Or can she perhaps be both ?

“ A Shot in the Dark”, by Marcelle Archard and adapted by Harry Kurnitz is play 4 in the season .  It  is a riotous whodunit that flips the murder mystery genre on its head and was the inspiration for Peter Sellars 1964 film of the same name.  With razor sharp dialogue and a cast of delightfully flawed characters, expect shocking twists and a murder investigation that dances on the edge of absurdity.

“.Home I’m Darling” by Laura Wade won the Laurence Olivier Award for best new comedy in 2018.
It is witty and full of 1950’s fashion, music and decor as we follow the trials and tribulations of a young couple who try to keep their marriage sparkling by living a fully authentic 1950’s lifestyle… but can they stay true to the good old days… or should they even try ?   Not to be missed !

Finally, the last play in the season is “ The Audience” by Peter Morgan. This is an extraordinary theatrical experience that brings history to life on the stage.  It’s the year that would have been Queen Elizabeth’s 100 th birthday. Behind closed doors, the Queen holds private weekly meetings with her Prime Ministers.  Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said.  This compelling drama breaks that contract of silence, imagining a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing St incumbents and their Queen. With sharp dialogue, rich characterisation and more than a touch of humour… the audience gets a unique glimpse into the inner workings of the British monarchy and the pivotal moments that have shaped a nation. A brilliant play !
