Australian teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout has stormed into the men’s 200m semifinals at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The 17-year-old clocked 20.23 seconds to finish top three in his heat and secure automatic qualification. Despite a slow bend, he powered home and even eased off in the final 30 metres.
“It feels pretty good, it’s great to be out here competing on the world stage,” Gout said. “Sub-20, that’s the goal – we’ll see in the semifinal.”
He will line up in lane four of the second semifinal on Thursday at 10:09pm AEST.
Meanwhile, Torrie Lewis kept her breakthrough form rolling, setting a new 200m personal best of 22.56 to qualify for the women’s semifinal. The 20-year-old matched British star Dina Asher-Smith around the bend to finish second in her heat.
“I was disappointed with my 100m semi – in my head I was a failure,” Lewis admitted. “Now it’s about recovery and pushing for the next one.”
Lewis will race from lane eight in her semifinal, scheduled for Thursday at 10:31pm AEST.
In the field, Cameron McEntyre threw a personal best 83.03m to secure a place in the men’s javelin final.
