Roads Old & New: A Cinematic Tribute to South Asian Migrants in Australia

Roads Old & New is a compelling 25-minute documentary that delves into the personal narratives of South Asian migrants who have journeyed to Australia over the past six decades. Produced by Hills Shire filmmaker Rajiv Chaudhri, the film is a collaborative effort with director Iqbaal Rizzvi and screenwriter Professor Brian Stoddart. This project is a joint venture between India and Australia, supported by organisations such as the Community Foundation of North Western Sydney, India Club, Indo Australian Sanatan Society, and the Indian Seniors Group Hornsby.
The documentary captures the multifaceted experiences of migrants from India, the United Kingdom, East Africa, and the United States, highlighting their challenges and triumphs in adapting to Australian society. Stories include a couple who left their young son in India due to financial constraints, a migrant who achieved professional success at the cost of personal relationships, and individuals who overcame racial discrimination to attain leadership roles in their respective fields.
Filmed in the Hills Shire, Roads Old & New not only showcases the resilience and contributions of South Asian migrants but also reflects on Australia’s evolution into a more inclusive society. The film has garnered international recognition, winning Best Documentary Film at the British Film Festival in London, Mumbai Entertainment International Film Festival, Prague Underground Film Festival. The film was finalist at The Global Visionaries Film Festival in Singapore, semi finalist at Paris International Shorts Festival, Kyoto Independent Film Festival, Hollywood International Golden Age Festival & San Francisco Arthouse Short Festival and received an Honorable Mention at Los Angeles Short Film Awards receiving nominations at various other film festivals.
With a musical score by Alfredo Zotti and cinematography by Shavinder Teona, the documentary offers an authentic and heartfelt portrayal of the migrant experience. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of migrants and their integral role in shaping Australia’s multicultural identity.
