NSW Minns Labor Government Makes Toll Relief Permanent
The NSW Labor Government toll relief that was due to expire at the if this year has now been made permanent for hundreds of thousands of people, particularly those who live in the North West and Western Sydney.
New South Wales drivers were spending $2.5 billion – that is right, $2.5 billion – annually on tolls, with the greatest impact on residents of Western Sydney. this is a welcome move to ease the cost-of-living pressures.
Labor Spokesperson for Castle Hill, Hawkesbury, Kellyville, Northern Tablelands and Winston Hills The Hon. Peter Primrose MLC said:
I applaud the announcement by the Minns Labor Government to permanently extend the $60-per-week cap for road tolls and not have it end on 1 January next year. Under the former Liberal Government, we had “tollmania”.
Labor’s toll cap has become an essential cost‑of‑living relief measure for hundreds of thousands of people, particularly those who live in Western Sydney. Permanently extending the toll relief measure makes sense. In 2024 the final report of the Independent Toll Review entitled Motorists First found New South Wales drivers were spending $2.5 billion—that is right, $2.5 billion—annually on tolls, with the greatest impact on residents of Western Sydney.
The report found that “people from Western Sydney suburbs spend more on tolls per week than people from elsewhere do”. The 2024 independent review went on to say:
“The evaluation of tolls has highlighted a number of significant concerns about tolls which impact on both efficiency and fairness. Tolls are generally considered to be too high. Motorists are paying more than is necessary and desirable. Although demand for toll road services is relatively unresponsive or inelastic to toll changes, high tolls cause a loss of economic welfare overall and adversely affect motorists struggling to meet the costs involved. The absence of a consistent network approach to setting tolls is also a source of inefficiency, unfairness and complexity.”
The Minns Labor Government introduced the $60-per-week cap in 2024, where drivers can claim up to $340 per week back.
It was due to expire at the end of this year. Now it will be made permanent
NSW Labor is creating an overall system that is a more efficient, fair and simple way to toll Sydney’s toll roads, particularly for those most affected by its costs.
